When to plant parsley in open ground and in a greenhouse

Parsley is a beloved herb. It grows quickly and isn't overly demanding when it comes to growing conditions, making it a popular choice in our gardens. But to fully enjoy its benefits and flavor, you need to know when to plant it.

When to plant in open ground in spring

For spring planting, beds are usually prepared as early as April. At least 0.5 buckets of manure should be added per square meter. If your garden soil is clayey, adding river sand or wood shavings to the beds is a good idea. The plant prefers loose, well-fertilized soil. If you're planting for foliage, be sure to add nitrogen fertilizer, and if you're planting for rhizomes, add phosphorus and potassium.

When deciding to plant parsley, choose the right site—the plant loves light, so it thrives in a sunny bed. Seeds can be sown as early as late April, and several sowings are possible, especially if the first few seeds fail to germinate.

It's important to remember that one of the characteristics of parsley is the long period from sowing to germination, so seedlings sown in April will not be ready for consumption until June.If you're eager to enjoy fresh greens, you can speed up the germination and ripening process by covering the beds with any protective material.

Timing of planting in a greenhouse

It's difficult to say exactly when parsley can be planted in protected greenhouses. If the room is protected from the cold, seeds can be sown as early as February. In greenhouse conditions, it's important to maintain optimal humidity and provide supplemental lighting. Regular ventilation is also a good idea to prevent fungal infections.

When to plant parsley in a greenhouse also depends on the region: while in southern regions sowing is acceptable in late February, in northern latitudes you can begin planting parsley closer to the end of March. You can also grow parsley from rhizomes or seedlings.

Timing of winter planting

However, most gardeners prefer to plant parsley before winter. It's important to time the planting correctly: the seeds should only have time to slightly sprout, but not germinate, otherwise the sprouts will inevitably die. For example, in the south, early to mid-November is considered the optimal time, while in northern latitudes and temperate climates, it's best to complete all parsley planting by the end of October. However, this isn't a set rule. Every winter is unique, and weather conditions vary from year to year, so be sure to consider the current weather forecast.

The same applies to the situation when it is necessary to plant root parsley – it is important to manage this before the night frosts arrive and the temperature begins to drop to -3 °C.
