Description of the variety

Yablochny Spas is a versatile variety that adapts fairly easily to any growing location. However, the central regions of Russia are considered the primary growing regions for this variety. However, Yablochny Spas is also successfully grown in the Urals and Siberia. However, soil and climate conditions are not as critical for this apple tree as for other varieties.

This is a triploid plant, characterized by the presence of three complete sets of chromosomes. Gardeners value this variety for the following characteristics:

• early fruit bearing. Apples ripen in mid-August;
• Productivity. A young tree can produce up to 50 kg of fruit;
• frost resistance;
• good taste of apples;
• easy care.

Characteristics of the tree and fruits

The following description of trees is typical for this variety:

• quite a large height;
• the crown is large and rounded;
• the tree trunk is smooth;
• the leaves have a pointed shape and a wavy edge;

The fruits of this variety have the following description:

• large sizes;
• weight is about 210 grams;
• The peel is yellow with a slight green tint. Apples also have a characteristic red vertical stripe running down one side. The color of this stripe can range from crimson to red.
• the skin is dense and smooth;
• The flesh is light-colored with a greenish tint. It is very juicy. The consistency is neither firm nor soft.

100 g of apples contain:

• 1% titratable acids;
• 10.5% fruit sugar;
• 16–17 mg of vitamin C.

Planting and pollination

Yablochny Spas is a self-fertile but not self-pollinating variety. Therefore, breeders recommend planting its seedlings alongside diploid young trees of other species.

Planting of this variety (summer varieties) is done in the spring, when the weather is warm. Planting in the fall (before the first frost) is also possible.

The landing is carried out as follows:

• a planting hole is dug, which should be larger than the root system of the seedling;
• fertilizers are placed at its bottom;
• Then a young tree is placed in the center of the hole. Its roots are spread out and carefully covered with soil.

After planting, the seedling should be watered with 2-3 buckets of water. With proper planting and subsequent care, the young tree will begin to bear fruit within three years of being planted in the garden. It's worth noting that this variety typically produces an increasing amount of fruit over time.

Harvesting and storage

The Yablochny Spas apple tree is an early-bearing tree. It produces fruit throughout August (from the 8th to the 19th). However, it's important to understand that ripening and harvest times vary depending on the growing region. Therefore, in some regions, fruit harvesting is delayed until early September.

After harvesting, I store the apples. To prolong their shelf life, the fruit should not be exposed to dampness or sudden temperature fluctuations. The ideal temperature is 0–4°C.

Apples can be stored in any type of container. Under proper conditions, the harvest will last for up to 6 months.

Diseases and pests

The Yablochny Spas variety boasts excellent immunity to scab, thanks to the presence of the Vf gene. Scab is a fungal infection that is a real scourge for many apple varieties. However, the variety has less resistance to other diseases.

With proper and comprehensive care, apple trees of this species are rarely affected by pathogenic microflora. However, if care instructions are not followed, the harvest and the tree itself may suffer from the following ailments:

• Rust. It manifests itself on leaves as brown spots that resemble rust. These spots have an orange or yellow halo;
• Powdery mildew. It is characterized by the appearance of a gray coating on the tree. In advanced stages of the disease, this coating turns brown. The disease causes the leaves to begin to dry out rapidly;
• Cytosporosis. When an apple tree is infected with this disease, brown-red cracks form on the tree's bark. These cracks affect all layers of the bark.

If signs of any disease are detected, the tree should be immediately sprayed with special solutions to combat pathogenic microflora. To prevent the development of diseases, trees in the garden should be sprayed prophylactically. Such spraying should be performed several times during the season.

This variety of apple tree is extremely rarely affected by parasites typical for this fruit crop.

Pros and cons

The Apple Savior variety is very popular among gardeners. Its popularity stems from the following qualities:

• rapid ripening of fruits;
• stable fruiting, which becomes much more abundant every year (with proper care);
• excellent taste of apples;
• the fruits have excellent appearance;
• easy care of planted seedlings;
• the presence of high resistance to scab.

It's worth noting that the variety has no obvious drawbacks. Therefore, Yablochny Spas is considered an optimal choice for beginning gardeners. After all, the trees require minimal care to produce an excellent harvest.
