Summer apple varieties
These varieties are early-ripening apple trees, and the harvest can be picked as early as midsummer. However, the fruit should be consumed as quickly as possible: within 2-3 weeks, it must be processed or eaten; unfortunately, it won't keep longer. So, let's begin describing summer apple varieties.
- Melba. Canadian breeders contributed to the creation of this apple tree. Its fruits are not very large, slightly elongated in shape. Their skin is yellowish, covered with a rich red blush. Under the skin is snow-white flesh of incredible sweetness. Of course, tart notes are also noticeable, but very minimal. You can enjoy these sweet apples as early as the end of August.
- White Naliv. An apple tree with green, round fruits that has been popular for a long time. Gradually, the green apples turn a paler color, close to white (hence the name). They have a rather loose and grainy flesh, slightly tart in taste. The apples spoil quickly, so they should be consumed immediately after picking.
- The Early Sweet apple tree produces round, yellowish fruits. As the name suggests, the taste is very sweet, with almost no tartness. The trees are quite stunted, never growing taller than a few meters. They begin bearing fruit in their third or fourth year and produce a harvest almost every year, with rare exceptions.
- Super Prekos. A medium-sized apple tree, it can begin harvesting in its fifth year. Its fruits are not particularly large, and are almost completely covered in a rich reddish blush. They taste sweet, although there are also hints of tartness. Furthermore, the apples are incredibly juicy.
Autumn apple varieties
Apple trees of these varieties begin to bear fruit in early autumn, and the fruits themselves are well preserved until mid-winter. These varieties are also excellent for canning. So, what are the autumn apple varieties?
- Mackintosh. The apple tree itself is tall and spreading, and the first apples can be harvested as early as early September, and they keep well until January. The apples are small, yellowish in color, and covered with a rich red blush on the outside. Under the skin, the fruit is pure white and has a spicy flavor. However, it has poor frost resistance, so additional insulation will be needed for winter.
- Auxis. A medium-sized tree with a medium-density crown. Apples begin to appear five years after planting. Fruiting itself begins in early autumn. The fruits are round, slightly flattened, with yellowish skin and a red blush. They taste quite sweet, although the tartness is also quite noticeable.
- Striped Cinnamon. A fairly popular variety, the trees reach considerable size. It copes well with low temperatures and most diseases. Of course, it's not without its drawbacks, and the Striped Cinnamon is late in fruiting—it takes about eight years to produce its first fruits. The apples are medium-sized and slightly flattened. The skin is yellowish, and the top is covered with stripes of blush. The flavor is sweet and sour, very spicy and juicy.
- Zhigulevskoye. A medium-sized tree with a broad, pyramidal crown. The first fruits can be harvested as early as September, 5–6 years after planting. The apples are medium-sized, round, golden in color, and covered with a delicate orange blush. The flesh is exceptionally juicy, and the flavor is sweet and sour.
- September. A winter-hardy variety with a relatively late fruiting period (5–7 years). As the name suggests, the harvest can begin in mid-September. The apples are round, fairly heavy (up to 130 g), have an excellent sweet and sour flavor, and are very juicy.
Winter apple varieties
The harvest can only be completed at the end of the autumn season, but they have excellent shelf life. So, you can safely store these apples until almost the following summer. What are the main varieties of this type?
- Golden Delicious. These very sweet apples are harvested in September and stored until March. Their skin is golden. The flesh itself is quite firm and juicy, with a delicate creamy hue. The apples are sweet in taste, with virtually no tartness. This variety has good winter hardiness, but high temperatures can be detrimental.
- Aelita. A good winter-hardy variety. It begins bearing fruit at 5-6 years of age and can provide farmers with an excellent harvest every year. The apples are round, slightly elongated, and yellowish in color. They also have a pleasant reddish blush. The flavor is sweet and sour, and the flesh is grainy and very juicy.
- Bogatyr. It has excellent scab resistance. It begins to bear fruit only 6-7 years after planting. The fruits themselves are round, slightly ribbed, and greenish in color. The taste is sweet and sour, unusually juicy. They can be stored for 250 days.
- Antonovka. A well-known variety loved by many. The fruits themselves are a beautiful golden color and taste sweet with a subtle tart note. The flesh is very crisp and white. They begin bearing fruit after the seventh year and tolerate low temperatures well.
Dwarf apple varieties
If you have a small plot, but still want to plant an apple tree, you can take advantage of dwarf varieties, which can be planted very compactly.
They grow no taller than 2-4 meters, so they don't require much space, and harvesting is very convenient. This way, you can plant your own small apple orchard that will always bring you joy. Here are some popular varieties of dwarf apple trees:
- Konfetnoye. An early-ripening variety boasting delicious and aromatic apples. They ripen by early August, with firm and juicy flesh, and the fruits themselves can weigh up to 120 kg.
- Sokolovskoye. An autumn variety that begins bearing fruit after approximately four years of age. The apples themselves are quite large—up to 200 g—greenish in color, covered with a light red blush on top. The taste is sweet and sour.
- Moscow Necklace. A recently developed variety, the first harvest can be collected just three years after planting. The fruits are very large, and the skin is a deep red. They taste sweet and sour, but the flesh, unlike most varieties, has a pinkish tint. Moscow Necklace is a winter variety.
