When the apple tree blossoms and blooms

"I planted a dwarf apple tree in my garden a few years ago, but I still haven't seen any flowers this spring. Could you tell me why, and is there any hope for me to see the apple tree bloom? (Dmitry)"

Everyone knows that apple trees bloom in the spring: leaves emerge and buds appear around May. However, there's also a regional factor: bud break can be delayed by almost a month, depending on the region where the tree grows. For example, in the southern regions, by mid-May you won't find a single unbloomed fruit tree, while closer to central Russia, orchards don't bloom until late May or even early June.

The flowering time is in the spring season

A young seedling does not bloom or bear fruit until it is 9–10 years old – this period is considered optimal for the appearance of the first flowers. However, the first buds will be very few in number, so at the end of summer you will only pick 1-2 apples.

Regular and careful tree care will help speed up the appearance of a blooming spring bounty: apple trees should be dug up in the spring and fall (this procedure strengthens the roots), the crown should be thinned at least once a month, and don't forget to whitewash the trunk.

The seedling begins to bloom at 9-10 years

Apple trees are also reluctant to bloom if they have unfavorable neighbors—for example, if a lilac bush grows nearby.

Thus, we can identify several main reasons why an apple tree does not bloom:

  • the flowers on your tree do not bloom, and therefore it does not bear fruit if the tree is still too young;
  • the technology for caring for the crop is violated - the gardener neglects pruning, watering, loosening, and does not feed the tree;
  • Sometimes a tree forms bud clusters, but the buds stubbornly refuse to open. This is caused by a pesky apple tree pest—the blossom beetle larva. Regular treatment of the orchard against diseases and insects is necessary to prevent this from recurring. Your local apple store will be able to advise you on the appropriate treatment for your orchard, taking into account your specific situation.
  • Another common reason why an apple tree doesn't bloom is a simple spring frost. No one can tell you what to do about it. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to change the situation.

The tree doesn't like frost.

  • If the apple tree is blooming, there has been no frost, but fruiting is still not observed, pollination problems may exist. You should ensure you have several suitable pollinators or even start your own apiary;
  • And the final reason: the tree's advanced age. In this case, rejuvenation methods will help: before fertilizing the apple trees with organic matter in the spring, try applying a nitrogen fertilizer, while simultaneously performing formative pruning. But if the situation hasn't improved after several seasons, feel free to get rid of the tree.

Whatever the problem, we're confident you'll overcome all difficulties, and next spring you'll be treated to a charming picture of lush blooms, and a picture of your beautiful garden will grace your social media profile to the envy of all your virtual friends. After all, now you know when apple trees typically bloom and how to achieve it.
