Is there a hybrid of peach and fig?
Recently, the peach-fig hybrid has attracted increasing interest from gardeners. This is because this fruit has a delicate and pleasant flavor. Furthermore, it is characterized by good resistance to low temperatures. However, the fig-peach hybrid is an entirely different plant, and is in no way related to the fig.
Experts are convinced that even with the best efforts of breeders, it's impossible to cross a peach with a common fig. In fact, the fig peach is just one variety of a well-known garden tree.
The peach crossed with the fig tree is a fiction. Of course, the fruit somewhat resembles a fig in appearance: it has a characteristic flattened shape and a subtle hairiness. The distinctive difference lies in the color of the flesh. While the flesh of a regular fig is mostly bright yellow, the fig variety is white. What's interesting about this fruit is that its delicate flavor is distributed throughout the entire fruit, which is not the case with a regular plant: the rich flavor is present just under the skin, and seems to dissolve closer to the seed.
Supposedly, a mixture of figs and peaches is also advantageous because it's much easier to transport without losing its marketable appearance. This tree, like another variety, the nectarine, is also widely popular in European countries, where it's called a "doughnut." The reason for this is that when the pit is removed, a neat round hole appears in the center of the fruit, hence the name.
Many lovers of unusual varieties will want to add this fruit tree to their garden. With the fig peach, you won't need any particularly complex cultivation techniques. The main thing is to carefully select the planting site:
- the area must be well lit, otherwise the fruits will not be able to fully fill out and ripen;
- It is also better to avoid unwanted “neighborhoods” – raspberries, gooseberries and currants;
- If grapes grow nearby, this will have a beneficial effect on the development of the plant;
- You shouldn't place the seedling under spreading, shady trees, otherwise the plant will suffer from a lack of sunlight.
The fake hybrid, commonly called a fig peach, is easy to grow in your garden. Try to feed the plant, water the substrate, and then mulch it to prevent moisture evaporation. Also, remember to prune the tree annually and spray it for pests.
By crossing peaches with other fruits, breeders concluded that this was impossible with figs. However, the fig tree, as a distinct species of peach, has many advantages and is prized by gardeners.
