Description of the large-fruited cherry variety Podbelskaya
Content
Description and breeding history
The Podbelskaya cherry variety appeared in the late 19th century thanks to K. Koch, who crossed the Ostheim and Lotova varieties. The new variety was first added to the state register in the middle of the last century.
The standard description of cherry varieties differs somewhat from that of the Podbelskaya variety. This plant is considered a vigorous fruit tree, capable of reaching a height of 5 meters. The crown is round, eventually becoming flattened and rounded with numerous leaves. The trunk of this variety has ash-gray bark with noticeable cracks.
The main branches of the crown are deflected from the trunk and are a rich brown color. Cherry shoots grow straight upward. The tree's leaves are large, rich green, and slightly glossy. They are broadly oval in shape with a pointed tip.
Cherry blossoms in clusters of four large white flowers each. It bears fruit in mixed clusters, forming berries on the cluster branches of last year's growth. The fruits form close together, singly or in pairs. They weigh approximately 5 g.
The Podbelskaya cherry variety produces large, black fruits with a seam at the top. The cherry flesh is juicy, with distinct grain and a delicate flavor. The light-colored pit inside the fruit is easily separated from the flesh. The berry's stalk is thick and loosely attached to the cherry. The fruits of Podbelskaya ripen in July; a more specific ripening period can be determined based on the region in which the crop grows. The berries of this variety ripen unevenly.
The fruits have versatile uses. They are particularly prized for their flavor and unique aroma. The berries are commonly used to make various desserts, preserves, and jams.
The cherry tree is characterized by high productivity: one tree can produce about 13 kg of fruit.
The first harvest of Podbelskaya can be collected several years after planting the seedling.
Based on its flowering time and some other characteristics, this cherry is considered an early variety. To produce a harvest, Podbelskaya requires pollinators. The Anadolskaya, Griot Ostheimsky, and Lotovaya varieties are commonly used for this purpose. Sweet cherry varieties, such as Prestige, often act as pollinators.
The Podbelskaya cherry variety, with its large black fruits, is highly productive, especially in the southern regions of the country, where the climate favors a rich harvest.
This variety's berries are very sensitive to low temperatures. Severe frosts can destroy generative buds, and in spring, the tree's buds and flowers are often damaged.
Podbelskaya has average resistance to fungal diseases, particularly coccomycosis. Chlorosis does not pose a threat to the crop. The berry has average drought tolerance.
Pros and cons of the variety
The description of the variety states that the plant has a number of positive and negative qualities.
In particular, a distinct advantage of this variety is its high resistance to various diseases. Furthermore, with proper care, it produces a stable and abundant harvest, which is especially noticeable when grown in southern regions. The excellent flavor of the fruit allows it to be used for more than just culinary purposes.
Growing Podbelskaya has its drawbacks. Specifically, the tree's considerable height makes its branches very difficult to reach. Furthermore, the plant exhibits only average cold tolerance.
Certain difficulties may arise due to the large Podbelskaya cherry tree's need for pollinators. This berry variety can only be propagated by other varieties. Therefore, if you decide to grow this cherry, you should plant other plants nearby. It is best to cultivate this berry in southern latitudes, as growing it in northern regions will require additional care, such as winter insulation. Furthermore, the plant may die in low temperatures.
So, the Podbelskaya cherry is an ideal choice for growing in a garden. Its delicious, aromatic berries will appeal to everyone, and its versatility allows for commercial-scale cultivation.
