How and when to prepare cuttings
Preparing grape cuttings is an important step that must precede planting. Seedlings are harvested in the fall. It's best to form them from shoots 7 to 10 mm in diameter. Pay attention to their color: it should be uniform, with no signs of rot.
Prepare branches, leaving four buds on each. This number is sufficient for normal germination in the spring. The branches should be cut at an angle. Be sure to make several vertical cuts at the base of each cut branch. This is necessary to ensure better metabolism.
When propagating by cuttings, sorting is crucial. Form several bunches, each of which should be of the same variety. If different varieties are in the same bunch, they will draw nutrients from each other for growth.
Grapevine branches need to be properly treated in the fall before winter to ensure their survival. To do this, apply copper sulfate. Use a 5% solution. If done correctly, harvesting grape cuttings in the fall will allow you to obtain a healthy and, most importantly, fruit-bearing plant in the future.
Storing cuttings in winter
Grape cuttings require optimal conditions for germination. There are several methods for properly storing cuttings over winter. The most popular is to pack the prepared bunches into bags. Use regular plastic bags. Fill each bag with sawdust soaked in water. Do not tie the bags tightly. Place each bag in the cellar.
Another method begins with propagating grapevines by cuttings, as described above. Dig trenches in a sunny, elevated area. It's important to choose a sheltered spot, such as near a barn or other outbuilding. The trench should be fairly deep (approximately 50 cm). Line the bottom with damp sand, place the bunches tightly on top, and cover with another 10 cm layer of sand. Cover with soil.
There's a simple and effective method for storing a small number of branches. Wrap them in cloth and place them in bags. Poke a small hole in each. Place them in the refrigerator. Periodically remove the bags and moisten the cloth.
Regardless of the method chosen, cuttings can be taken as early as the end of February. The vines should be wiped to remove any mold. Branches with bark that is not overdried or peeling are considered suitable.
Growing grape cuttings at home is a lengthy process, but sprouting planting material doesn't require the many steps required for seedlings or seedlings. Proper storage of grape cuttings over winter is crucial to ensure the plant grows quickly and produces abundant fruit.
When to plant in the ground
When should I plant cuttings? Answer: in the spring. This can be done as soon as the temperature remains consistently above 0°C.
What phase of the moon should I plant? The position of the moon largely determines the vine's subsequent growth. Astrologers recommend planting on the 3rd, 12th, 17th, and 24th lunar days. For good growth and root development, choose the waning moon, but only if the moon is in favorable zodiac signs.
The optimal time is considered to be when the Moon is in Cancer, Taurus, or Scorpio. Planting is also possible when the Moon is in Pisces and Capricorn.
Preparing the site and cuttings
Grape seedlings require additional preparation and treatment before planting. This process consists of several steps, each of which must be completed:
- Use a needle or nail to make a few scratches at the bottom of the branch.
- Place the cuttings in water for 24 hours.
- Use a rooting stimulator by pouring it into a container and placing the lower part of the branch in it. Leave it for another day.
- Place the seedlings in a container with plain water so that they are only 3–4 cm deep in water. Place the container in a sunny location.
After 10 days, you'll see the buds swell. A new shoot should soon appear, and after 20 days, the branches will sprout their first roots.
Planting grapes from cuttings in spring also requires proper site preparation. First, dig a 1x1 m hole. Fill the bottom layer with a bucket of sand, top with 1-2 buckets of compost, and then another 4 buckets of soil. Fill the hole to the top. Add about 200 g of single superphosphate and the same amount of potassium salt. Water generously.
Planting grapes in the fall using cuttings is also possible. In this case, the hole should be prepared in midsummer, and the sprouted, prepared cuttings should be planted before frost sets in. Spring is considered more suitable for most varieties.
Planting methods and rooting
Grape cuttings must be rooted before planting. The simplest method for rooting grape cuttings is using plastic cups. Before rooting, viticultural experts recommend soaking the branches in a honey solution for 24 hours. It's easy to prepare: add 1 tablespoon of high-quality natural honey to 10 liters of water.
Only the lower part should be placed in the container with the solution. After 24 hours, the branches are planted in cups. These should first be filled with a mixture of humus, peat, soil, and sand. You can prepare the containers yourself for rooting the grapes. Some prefer to make them from ordinary plastic bottles. Simply cut off the top and fill the bottle with the mixture.
How to plant grapevine cuttings in spring? There are two methods: vertical and inclined. The vertical method is most commonly used for planting grapevine cuttings, as it increases fruiting. Avoid planting the cuttings too close together, as this will complicate subsequent care after planting.
Aftercare
It's not enough to know how to plant, when and how to prepare, and how to germinate grapevines. It's also necessary to learn the basic rules of subsequent care in advance. Anyone can see from personal experience that vines grow well only if all the basic rules are followed.
Once the seedlings are in the ground, they need to be watered thoroughly. Apply water at the roots, being careful not to touch the trunk. Avoid watering for 14 days before flowering. How to grow seedlings quickly? To stimulate growth, simply follow all the above-described guidelines for preparing cuttings.
It's also important to properly tie up the sprouted shoots. Pinching will speed up the formation of a full-grown bush. The top should be removed two days before flowering.
If you've prepared the fertilizer mixture correctly, it will ensure normal growth for three years. Growing grapes from cuttings indoors requires subsequent fertilization. Feed the plant with organic and mineral nutrients. Use superphosphates, potassium salt, and bird droppings. While growing the plant, you can add compost and manure to the soil.
When propagating from cuttings indoors, remember that the plant needs to be covered for the winter. It also requires periodic pruning and pest control.
Now you know how to properly grow grapes from cuttings and provide the plant with proper care.
