Characteristics of white grapes
What makes white grapes special? They are one of the most popular varieties of this plant. White grapes are considered table grapes, meaning they can be eaten fresh without processing. There are many varieties of this grape, but each one has a very rich and sweet flavor, sometimes even with hints of currant or blackberry. Furthermore, white grapes are rich in beneficial vitamins and essential oils. Although most "white" grapes are considered table grapes, there are also industrial varieties used to make juice or wine.
The best varieties
Among the many varieties, we have selected ten of the most popular and delicious, which will become a true treasure for your vineyard.
White Muscat
This is a commercial grape variety that produces excellent juice and wine. It produces large clusters and golden-colored berries with a subtle Muscat aroma. The berries have a very pleasant flavor, with hints of citrus and tea rose. It can only produce peas in unfavorable climates; overall, it is relatively resistant to various diseases.
If the climate is warm and dry, there will be no problems with pollination, but if the humidity is high and the air temperatures are relatively low, it is better to carry out pollination yourself. Also keep in mind that this variety is not very frost-resistant, so Muscat will need additional shelter for the winter.
White delight
This white grape is frost-resistant, making it suitable for cultivation even in Russia's northern regions. It produces fairly large clusters and berries. The flesh is very juicy and crisp, with a distinctive Muscat flavor. The berries ripen quickly—in just 110 days after planting. Vostorg also boasts excellent drought tolerance, is relatively resistant to common diseases, and maintains its appearance well during transportation.
White Flame
This relatively new grape variety is characterized by good frost resistance and early ripening. Harvesting begins in just 90–95 days, which is a very short ripening period. The berries are small, but the clusters themselves are quite heavy, weighing up to 2 kg. The berries are very sweet, juicy, and crisp. White Flame is suitable for fresh consumption, various preserves, and industrial production.
The only significant drawback of the variety is its low resistance to diseases and pests.
White miracle
This frost-resistant variety is popular in Russia and boasts excellent characteristics. It keeps well, does not spoil during transportation, and has a wonderful flavor. It also boasts excellent resistance to most diseases. It produces fairly heavy bunches (up to a kilogram) and large oval berries.
The fruits are sweet and juicy, and you'll find several (usually two) seeds inside. The berries themselves are quite pale in color, but if they're exposed to sunlight for extended periods, they may turn slightly pink. Overall, this is a good choice, as growing these grapes will yield a bountiful harvest with minimal effort.
Maxi white
Another excellent early variety. It produces fairly heavy bunches (about a kilogram) and huge berries—one reaches up to 5 cm in diameter. The berries themselves are oval and yellow-green. They taste sweet and juicy, and the flesh is quite firm. This variety produces excellent white wine. Its drawbacks include poor resistance to almost all diseases, so you'll need to treat this variety more often than others. Overall, however, it's a good commercial variety that can be used to produce a high-quality wine.
White Giant
An early variety with large clusters and enormous berries. A single berry can weigh as much as 50 g. The berries themselves are yellow-green, with very sweet and crisp flesh and a muscat aroma. It ripens in 90–110 days. White Giant has good frost resistance and is resistant to most diseases, with the possible exception of gray mold.
Chardonnay
This variety can rightfully be called one of the most popular worldwide. It is easily recognized by its Muscat aroma and wonderful lemon notes. It is widely used in winemaking and champagne production. Despite being a low-yielding variety with small, white-green berries and a light varietal aroma, it is very popular in industrial production. Its clusters are very small, barely reaching 100 grams in weight.
It will be necessary to cover it for the winter, and also ensure that it does not become susceptible to any diseases.
Also pay attention to the soil condition and its nutrient levels. Growing Chardonnay is not an easy task, so it's best to purchase this variety only if you're a professional viticulturalist.
White Cockle
A domestic table grape variety developed relatively recently. It ripens early (approximately 120 days) and has excellent frost and drought resistance. It produces heavy bunches (up to 600 g) and large berries. The fruits are sweet and juicy. Furthermore, KoKl has good resistance to most diseases.
White Pearl
A versatile variety that's easy to grow even for novice winegrowers. This early-ripening variety features small clusters and small yellowish berries. They taste quite juicy. Among the positive qualities of White Pearl are its excellent drought tolerance, frost resistance, and resistance to most diseases.
Husayn
Also known as Damskie Pal'chiki (Lady Fingers), it's quite demanding—it can't be grown in cold regions, as it doesn't tolerate temperatures below -18 degrees Celsius (-18 degrees Fahrenheit). The berries ripen late (in 150 days), the clusters are medium-sized (up to 800 g), and the berries are oblong and yellow-green. The flavor is sweet and crisp. Overall, Husayne is difficult to grow, and it's susceptible to most diseases. Therefore, it's recommended that only professional winegrowers choose this variety.
