Tomato variety "Titan": description and main characteristics
Content
Main characteristics
Tomato varieties differ not only in fruit characteristics but also in yield. Titan is an excellent choice for those gardeners willing to wait a bit for a bountiful and delicious harvest. It is a variety developed in 2000 by Russian breeders in the North Caucasus region. It is recommended for cultivation in both protected and unprotected soil. It can be grown in the following locations:
However, it is still recommended for growing in greenhouses or open ground. Its small stature and easy care make it suitable for indoor cultivation on loggias, balconies, and windowsills. The cultivar was developed by the North Caucasus Research Institute of Viticulture and Horticulture and the Crimean Experimental Breeding Station.
The bushes of this type of tomato are characterized by the following characteristics:
- determinacy;
- A low bush. Its height does not exceed 60 cm. On average, the plant grows to 40 cm;
- The bush is characterized by medium foliage. The leaves on the bush are quite large and green in color;
- The bush does not require support or tying. There is also no need to remove side shoots;
- The first inflorescence will form approximately above the 5th to 7th leaf. Subsequent inflorescences are located two leaves apart;
- The harvest ripening period is mid-late. It takes approximately 120-140 days from planting the seedlings to the appearance of the first vegetables;
- the plant has excellent resistance to various diseases caused by fungi;
The bush produces small, round fruits. Each cluster produces about five tomatoes. Their skin is red. The average weight of a single tomato ranges from 80 to 120 grams. The pulp contains three or four chambers, and its dry matter content is around 5%. It produces few seeds.
It's worth noting that thanks to their thick skin, tomatoes withstand transportation well. Moreover, the skin is not prone to cracking. Furthermore, they retain their appearance and flavor well during storage. However, to achieve this, they need to be stored in cool places.
These tomatoes are characterized by exceptional taste. Together with their excellent commercial qualities, this makes them the most popular variety in our country. And thanks to its excellent shelf life and transportability, Titan has become especially popular among farmers.
Despite its high resistance to fungal diseases, Titan is very susceptible to late blight. The plant is also susceptible to stolbur. The bush has moderate resistance to septoria and macrosporiosis.

Where is the best place to grow?
Since Titan is designed for growing outdoors and indoors, as well as indoors or in apartments, its growing regions are quite broad. However, this variety is best grown in the southern regions of our country (for example, Crimea, the North Caucasus, and the Astrakhan region). Here, plants can be planted outdoors without fear of a poor harvest.
In the central regions of the country, greenhouses are recommended for growing Titan. The bushes can be covered with plastic, creating a simplified version of a greenhouse. However, in the northern regions of the country, this variety can only be grown in greenhouses.
In addition to the Russian Federation, Titan is actively grown in Moldova and Ukraine.
Directions for use
One of the most important parameters for vegetable crops, which determines gardeners' choice of variety, is the intended use of the harvest. Titan tomatoes can be eaten fresh. Furthermore, they make an excellent addition to full-fledged dishes, not just salads.
Tomatoes' small size makes them ideal for canning. They're ideal for barrel pickling. If desired, they can be used to make tomato pastes, purees, and juices.
Productivity
One of the main advantages of this variety is its high fertility. However, it's worth noting that to achieve the desired yield, it's necessary to strictly follow all recommended cultivation practices for Titan. In this case, one plant can yield 4.5-5 kg of tomatoes.
Considering that approximately 8-9 bushes can be planted per unit of area, with proper care, up to 35 kg of select harvest can be obtained from one square meter. As a result, the maximum yield per hectare will be around 590 centners. This is a very good result, which not every variety can match.
Features of the variety
As already noted, Titan's main advantage is its high yield. This is the most difficult to achieve when growing other varieties of this vegetable crop. However, the plant's advantages don't end there. Among Titan's most useful and relevant features are the following:
- high resistance of bushes to fungal pathogens;
- Dwarfism. Thanks to this factor, even a small greenhouse can yield a bountiful harvest;
- the possibility of growing plants in urban conditions;
- excellent commercial quality of fruits;
- tomato uniformity;
- excellent taste;
- high transportability of vegetables;
- Excellent tolerance of bushes to lack of moisture.
As you might guess, these same characteristics are advantages of this variety over other varieties. It is thanks to them that Titan is so popular today among gardeners both in our country and abroad.
However, since we've already discussed the advantages of plants, it's also important to note their disadvantages. After all, these are also unique characteristics of the species. In this case, the following points can be considered disadvantages:
- plants do not tolerate low temperatures well;
- At the growth stage, the bushes are quite capricious in relation to the applied fertilizers;
- The harvest ripens late. Therefore, if the plants were planted in the temperate zone and in open ground, the vegetables may not have time to ripen before the onset of cold weather.
It's worth noting that plant deficiencies can be compensated for by growing them in greenhouses, as well as by understanding the specific nuances of their growth in a particular region.
Growing tips
To ensure healthy, strong bushes that will produce good fruit, when growing Titan, it's important to follow certain tips and recommendations. Tips for growing this vegetable are as follows:
- planting material for obtaining seedlings should be sown 65-70 days before transplanting them into the ground;
- at the stage of two true leaves, picking is carried out;
- excellent predecessors are zucchini, cucumbers, cauliflower, carrots, dill and parsley;
- 6-9 plants should be placed per square meter (data varies from source to source). A 50 x 40 cm planting pattern is used;
- Plants should be watered starting 14 days after planting;
- the bushes need to be watered as needed;
- As the shoots grow, it is advisable to tie them up so that they do not break under the weight of the fruit;
- the bush should be formed from 2-3 shoots;
- At the stage of active development, plants are fed with fertilizers containing phosphorus and potassium.

These simple tips will help you achieve excellent fruiting from your planted plants.
Diseases and pests
Titan is resistant to various fungal pathogens, but susceptible to late blight. To combat the disease, reduce watering and ventilate the greenhouse. As a preventative measure, the bushes can be treated with Fitosporin.
Plants of this variety often suffer from the following pests:
- codling moth;
- white butterfly;
- sawfly.
To get rid of these insects, plants are sprayed with Lepidocide.
As we can see, Titan is an excellent tomato variety for home, garden, and vegetable garden.
