The intricacies of planting cucumbers in June

Peculiarities of growing cucumbers
Cucumbers are very popular not only in Russia but also in other CIS countries. This annual plant with a climbing stem originated in India.
Planting this crop in June will ensure a harvest right up until the first frost. To ensure a high-quality harvest, the seedlings should be planted on specific favorable days, determined by the lunar calendar for 2025. This calendar should be used as a guide for sowing cucumbers in the summer. It is best to plant during the waxing moon, from June 2nd to 8th and from June 27th to 30th. Remember that planting times depend not only on the variety but also on the climate zone and weather conditions.
If planting cucumber seeds or seedlings in the summer and according to the 2025 lunar calendar, it's important to not only choose favorable days but also favorable conditions. For the seeds to germinate and the seedlings to take root, the following conditions must be met:
- air temperature – 24–28 °C. A slight decrease in temperature of not less than 15 °C is allowed;
- It is recommended to form protected beds (for example, cover with film, create steam beds, etc.)
- The light level should be high enough, but slightly less than for tomatoes. The planting site should be well-lit;
- Fertile soil. Ideally, the soil should be rich in humus. It should also be well-aerated and permeable to water. It should also be well-heated and have a light texture. Therefore, when growing cucumbers, the beds should be fertilized periodically.
The most important thing for cucumbers is the soil. It should be neutral. Acidic soils are "deacidified" with lime. Ash, chalk, and dolomite flour can also be used.
Proper watering is crucial for cucumbers. This crop is considered very moisture-loving, as despite its extensive foliage, it has a weak root system. Watering is especially important when the plants are actively growing fruit. Only warm water should be used. Otherwise, the plants will become diseased and stunted, leading to their death.
When growing cucumbers, it's important to remember two key things: this crop dislikes cold water and cold soil. Knowing these two conditions will help you achieve an excellent harvest when planting seeds and seedlings in June 2025 according to the lunar calendar.

In this video, farmers share their experiences planting cucumber seeds and seedlings in the ground.
Preparing the beds
Proper preparation of the beds is crucial for growing cucumbers in the spring and summer. The area where seeds will be sown or seedlings will be planted is prepared as follows:
- all plant debris is removed from the area;
- Next, the soil must be dug to the depth of the bayonet of the shovel used;
- Then, the soil is fertilized with a peat-humus mixture/compost/rotted cow manure. One to two buckets of organic matter per square meter of land is sufficient. Mineral fertilizers should include double superphosphate/ammonium nitrate/potassium magnesium sulfate. A ready-made fertilizer complex, nitroammophoska, can be used instead of individual fertilizers.

Typically, such preparation of the beds is carried out in the fall, when the harvest is complete.
In the summer, before planting seedlings according to the 2025 lunar calendar, it is necessary to form the beds, loosen them, and cut them into separate furrows.
Warm beds should be prepared in the fall or early spring. Their creation involves the following steps:
- A trench is dug to a depth of approximately 50-60 cm (approximately two shovel blades). Its width should be 1-1.2 meters, and the length is chosen arbitrarily;
- sawn logs of apple and pear trees, 60-70 cm long, are placed across the dug trench;
- The sides of the trench are lined with wood chips, sawdust, and branches, and turf is poured on top. All of this should be well compacted;
- Next, place a dry tree leaf, and on top of it, cover with soil mixed with compost in a 1:1 ratio. The soil layer should be 10 cm high.
Some gardeners also add a wooden frame around the trench. The south-facing boards should be inclined by 5-10 degrees. This will allow the soil to warm up better. The west-facing boards can also be inclined by 3-5 degrees. On sunny days, such a trench will trap significantly more heat. A garden bed created this way will last 8-10 years.
Planting technology
Once the beds are ready, you can plant seedlings or sow seeds. For best results, choose the most favorable days for 2025. The lunar calendar is a good guide. There are many favorable days in 2025, but they generally fall in early spring. In June 2025, the most favorable days for planting will be the 5th-7th and the 25th. It's also important to remember that according to the lunar calendar, there are also unfavorable days in June 2025, falling on the 1st-2nd and the 9th.
Having determined the favorable days for planting cucumbers for 2025 using the lunar calendar, you can sow seeds or plant seedlings. During this period, seeds should be planted in the usual way, no more than 2-3 cm deep. Seedlings should be planted in the evening or on cloudy days. This is done to prevent the sun's rays from scorching the young plants.
Cucumbers can be planted in summer both outdoors and in a greenhouse. However, it's important to remember to avoid squash plants as a precursor.
The crop should be planted as follows:
- Fertilizing is essential first. This is done after the first harvest. Compost, humus, or peat should be used as fertilizer. These can be mixed in equal parts. It is also recommended to add wood ash, slaked lime, urea, or saltpeter to the nutrient mixture. Fertilizer should be applied at a rate of 5-8 kg per square meter. Fertilizer should be scattered over the soil.
- After this, it is dug up and simple beds are formed;
- Seedlings should be planted 20 cm apart. If there are multiple beds, the distance between adjacent plants should be at least one meter.
Planting seeds of any cucumber variety can be done using either nests or linear methods. The nests should be square and 60x60 or 70x70 cm in size. It is recommended to plant 4-5 seeds per nest. The seeds should be planted 3 cm deep. Sprinkle the seeds with a finely ground mixture of red and black pepper. This mixture will help protect the seedlings from rodents and pests.
Seedlings should be planted in open ground along with the soil. Leave a 40-cm gap between adjacent holes. Before planting, water the bottom of the hole with a hot, weak solution of potassium permanganate. Afterwards, plant the bushes and cover them with soil. The beds are then moistened and mulched.
As we can see, the technology for planting cucumbers in summer is quite simple and easy to implement.
Care
After planting, proper care must be provided for the plants, which in 2025 can also be based on the lunar calendar. Here, favorable days should be chosen for fertilizing and watering. Cucumbers are very moisture-loving crops. Plant beds need frequent watering during the period of active fruiting. It is dangerous to water the plants on days when the moon is under the influence of Gemini and Libra. In June, such unfavorable days fall on the 25th and 26th. On all other favorable days, watering with warm water is safe. It is recommended to water the roots in the evening.
The 27th and 28th of June are excellent days for mulching. Mulch with compost, sawdust, or regular lawn clippings.
It is essential to loosen the beds and remove weeds, which can clog young plants, taking away their nutrients and moisture.
Hilling of cucumbers is carried out after the appearance of the second true leaf.
Depending on the growing method, it is recommended to form cucumber bushes in 2025 according to the lunar calendar on June 29-30.
At night, to protect against August cold snaps, the beds should be covered with plastic film, which can be replaced with agrofibre. This type of protection is only necessary in August, when there is a slight drop in temperature at night.
Fertilizer
Fertilizing is an important part of cucumber care. This crop responds quite well to both foliar and root fertilization.
Gardeners recommend fertilizing beds with a solution of slurry and zonal infusion. As for mineral fertilizers, it's best to use a combination of urea, potassium nitrate, and superphosphate.
The nutrient solution should be prepared according to the proportions indicated on the fertilizer packaging. In June 2025, favorable days for fertilizing cucumbers are the 4th-5th, 23rd-24th, and 27th-28th. Fertilizing is especially important during the period of active fruit formation.
By planting cucumber bushes in June and caring for them properly in accordance with the lunar calendar, you can have fresh cucumbers on your table until the frost sets in.
