Criteria for choosing a variety for open ground
The range of crops is vast. When choosing varieties for outdoor planting, the first consideration is how quickly a harvest is needed. Varieties are divided into three groups:
- Early. The fruits appear very early, but the harvest is meager. The fruits are not very sweet, but in the second half of spring, a source of vitamins appears.
- Medium. A generous harvest can be collected in early summer, 105-125 days after sprouting. The harvest is moderately sweet, does not spoil during long-term storage, and contains many beneficial components.
- Late varieties. They ripen 3–4 weeks later than mid-season varieties. They are harvested in early autumn. They can be stored until spring or longer without losing their flavor or quality.

Long-term storage is an important criterion. To ensure the harvest lasts as long as possible (ideally until the next harvest), varieties with a growing season of 115 days or more are needed. In addition to good shelf life, such fruits are prone to cracking.
Here are some additional criteria for successful cultivation of crops in open ground:
- presence of immunity to diseases;
- good survival rate in different climatic conditions;
- undemanding to soils.
If the variety name on the packaging includes the designation "F1," it's a hybrid. Don't try to propagate it next year using seeds, as hybrid seeds don't inherit varietal characteristics. However, their fruits are the best—sweet, without any bitterness.
