When to plant

The most important thing to remember when deciding to plant carrots in your garden is the sowing time. The timing of planting depends on the variety chosen. It's also important to know that you can plant carrots three times per season:

• in spring;
• in summer;
• before winter.

Spring planting of carrots is a familiar method for most gardeners. There's even a proverb that says the seeds should be sown on May 1st. According to folk wisdom, planting can take place after the aspen or violet has bloomed. But this procedure can also be carried out after the first leaves have appeared on the birch tree. However, these are all conventions, as much depends on the climate of the region and the variety.

When choosing the timing for planting seeds, it is important to remember that the soil must be well warmed for successful germination. However, it shouldn't dry out too much. Otherwise, the germination rate of the seed will be minimal. For example, in the Urals, spring carrot planting is done in the first two weeks of May.

Summer seed planting usually occurs in the second half of June (from the 15th until the end of the month). Late-ripening varieties are typically sown at this time, which will then be stored for the winter. This is also a good time to replant if the spring-planted seeds have failed to germinate.

Planting carrots before winter is a good idea if you want an early harvest. To achieve this, sow dry seeds about a week before the first frost. Gardeners typically do this in late October or early November. Experts recommend planting varieties such as Nanskaya 4, Moskovskaya Zimnyaya, and Shantenay 2461 before winter. However, it's important to keep in mind that in this case, a small bed is recommended. Harvests from winter-planted seeds can be eaten starting in June.

It's also important to know that carrots grown this way should not be stored. This is because overgrown carrots become tasteless and tough.

There are also specific timings for different varieties of this crop:

• early maturing varieties should be planted around the 20th of April;
• early ripening varieties are sown in the period from April 25 to May 5;
• Late varieties intended for winter storage are recommended to be sown on June 10-15.

Pre-sowing seed preparation

Carrots are a vegetable crop whose seeds take a long time to germinate. This is due to the high essential oil content of the seeds. These oils help them store well. To increase their germination rate, their essential oil content must be reduced. Therefore, during summer and spring planting, only soaked seeds should be used. This will remove the essential oils. The procedure for preparing the seeds for planting in this case is as follows:

• the seed material should be poured into a linen bag;
• Then we lower it into a jar filled with warm water (temperature around 50 degrees Celsius).
• the bag should be thoroughly rinsed in water and left in the jar until the water has completely cooled;
• Then you need to rinse the seeds thoroughly again. But at this stage, you should use cold water;
• After washing, dry the planting material a little.

There is another option for preparing carrot seeds for planting:

• The seeds must be soaked in clean water at room temperature for two hours;
• Next, scatter the seeds over a damp cloth. Cover them with a damp cloth on top;
• in this state they should be kept in the room until they swell;
• periodically, the seeds under the fabric need to be stirred, and the fabric itself needs to be moistened as it dries;
• Once all the seeds have swollen and begun to sprout, they are placed in the refrigerator for 10 days. This will harden them well.

Once preparation is complete, the seeds can be planted in open ground.

Row planting

Every gardener should know how to plant carrots correctly. After all, the subsequent harvest directly depends on the correct sowing technique. Provided, of course, that the carrots were properly cared for in the open ground.

There are several ways to plant carrots. One commonly used method is the row method. When using this method, remember to plant the seedlings in firm soil at a consistent depth. Only then can you expect uniform germination.

The row sowing method is implemented as follows:

• First, you need to loosen the soil using a flat cutter;
• then we make furrows. For this, you can use boards laid on edge;
• Before you start sowing carrots, the furrows should be well watered;
• If the seeds are small, it is recommended to mix them with sand in a ratio of 1:5 before planting. Alternatively, you can use a special tool for sowing instead of mixing them with sand;
• The carrot row should not be planted too densely. The distance between seeds or granules should be approximately 5 cm;
• Once the planting material is placed in the furrows, it is covered with dry soil. The added soil layer should not exceed 1 cm in thickness. Vermicompost or compost can be used instead of soil.

Once carrot sowing is complete, optimal care should be provided for the plantings. It's important to remember not to water the beds from above. Otherwise, a hard crust of soil will form on top of the seedlings. Young plants won't be able to break through this crust, resulting in low germination rates.

Some experts note that the seed can be embedded in coconut coir. In this case, the briquette should be soaked in water and left there until it swells.

It's worth noting that coconut coir retains moisture quite well while remaining lightweight. This makes it much easier for seedlings to germinate, and seed germination rates will approximately double.

Another tricky part about planting carrots is alternating rows with onions. The smell of onions will help repel carrot flies.

Planting before winter

To get an early carrot harvest, gardeners plant carrot seeds before winter. In this case, the beds should be prepared in September-October.

In this case, carrot planting is carried out according to the following scheme:

• First, you should select a level area that won't be flooded by meltwater. The chosen location should also be protected from the wind and clear of weeds. It's recommended to choose an area with light soil that won't allow ice to form on it.
• Next, dig the soil to a depth of 22-25 cm. If necessary, phosphorus-potassium fertilizers and compost can be added during digging. The type of fertilizer applied depends on the preceding crops and the soil composition.
• If the weather is dry, the prepared beds should be watered. This will stimulate the growth of weeds, which will need to be eliminated;
• Before the frosts that have already set in, the surface of the beds is leveled. There should be no depressions left;
• After this, furrows are cut. Their depth should be approximately 4-5 cm. By the time of planting, the soil will have compacted and the furrow depth will be 3 cm;
• Before planting, add a thin layer (1-1.5 cm) of peat, humus, or compost to the bottom of the furrows. If these are not available, soil or sand can be used.

The furrows are left in this position until the soil freezes solid. Seeds are planted once the outside temperature has stabilized, not falling below 5°C (41°F). If snow remains in the furrows, sweep it away immediately before beginning work. Prepared sand, humus, or compost is poured into the bottom of the furrows, and the seeds are placed inside. After this, the soil is mulched with peat. Other materials can also be used for mulching. The beds are then stored for the winter in this condition.

It's worth noting that no pre-treatment is required when planting carrot seeds. The seedlings must remain dry. The seeding rate (per unit of planting area) in this case is considered to be 25-30% higher than what is typically used for spring planting.

In this case, the seeds in the soil are exposed to frost and cold, thus undergoing natural hardening. As a result, the plants grown from them are much more resilient. They are characterized by a strong root system. Furthermore, such plantings are much less susceptible to attacks from various pests.

With properly managed beds, and if planting and care were carried out according to all the rules, the first shoots will appear approximately 1-2 weeks earlier than with spring planting. The harvest can be harvested 2-3 weeks earlier than usual. It will also be rich in vitamins and more delicious.

When planning to plant carrots in winter, it's important to understand that choosing the right varieties is crucial. In this case, it's important to choose varieties that are resistant to frost and adverse weather conditions. Varieties such as Nantskaya 14 and Nantskaya 4 have proven themselves excellent for winter planting. They develop roots faster than other varieties. Excellent yields in this case include Moskovskaya Zimnyaya A-151, Olympia, Nesravnennaya, Leningradskaya, Konservnaya, NIIOKh-336, Shantane, and Vitaminnaya.

Please remember that the harvest obtained in this way is only suitable for summer consumption. Such vegetables should not be stored for the winter.

To obtain tasty and beautiful root vegetables, when using the winter planting method, plant care should include the following steps:

• Maintaining a proper watering regime. It's important to remember that carrots need to be watered evenly throughout the growing season. If they're underwatered, the vegetables will turn out tough and tasteless.
• Loosening the soil between rows. This procedure should be carried out after watering or rain;
• Weeding and weed control. This should be done throughout the growing season;
• preventive treatment of plantings against diseases and insects;
• application of fertilizers.

In addition, the plantings must be thinned as they grow. Otherwise, the roots will be small and underdeveloped.

It's worth noting that all the above-described steps should be carried out expertly and at the right time. If done correctly, the harvest is highly likely to be excellent in both taste and quality.
