Description of the high-yielding gooseberry variety Green Rain
Content
Description of the variety
The Green Rain gooseberry is a hybrid variety bred at the All-Russian Selection and Technological Institute of Nursery and Horticulture. This cultivar forms large, medium-spreading, and dense bushes with upright, strong shoots. The thorns on the branches are small and sparse, primarily growing at the base of the bush. The fruits are oval-pear-shaped. The berries are light green, developing a yellowish tint when fully ripe. They are quite large, weighing 5–8 g. The skin is thin.
Green rain is a light-loving plant, so it is not recommended to plant it in shaded areas. Fruit-bearing bushes should be regularly weeded, fertilized, and watered. They are best planted in moderately moist soil. Bushes can be grown without supports.
Ripening time and productivity
This gooseberry variety is early-bearing. It begins to bear fruit in the second year after planting. The fruit ripens fairly late, from late July to August. It is a frost-hardy variety.
The yield of this crop is very high – 4 kg, but with proper care it can reach 5 kg per bush. When grown as a standard (like a small tree), the yield of this gooseberry variety increases by a quarter. The berries are densely packed on the branch, resembling raindrops.
Taste qualities
The berries of this variety have an excellent flavor. They are aromatic and sweet, with a hint of honey. They are consumed both fresh and processed (jam, preserves).
Resistance to diseases and pests
This plant is susceptible to the same diseases and pests as others, but it is worth noting its special resistance to fungal diseases such as anthroncosis and spheroteka.
