The most productive potato varieties in Russia today

How to choose
Growing potatoes, like any garden crop, directly depends on the climate in your area: varieties that are highly productive in the south of our country will never be productive in northern latitudes, and vice versa. Central Russia (the European part of Russia) has its own distinctive climate, which dictates agricultural practices. This region typically experiences a temperate continental climate, with cold winters and hot summers.
Moreover, the temperate zone receives sufficient rainfall at any time of year. This is why choosing the optimal potato variety is so important when growing potatoes in Krasnodar – the plant must be resilient to potential excess moisture and ripen before the first frost.
Accordingly, potato varieties for central Russia should not be late-ripening – they simply will not have time to form roots.
There are several types of potatoes:
- Early potatoes – Krasnodar, like any city in the central part of the country, is suitable for growing early varieties. However, it's important to remember that these potatoes are not suitable for long-term storage and should be used within a few weeks of being removed from the soil.
- mid-early potatoes - varieties with a mid-season ripening period can be prepared for the winter, but they require specific storage conditions - the room must be cool and dry, and it is essential to maintain a constant temperature;
- mid-season potatoes - Krasnodar, Rostov or any other city in the Central Belt are the most suitable zone for growing this particular type - these potatoes grow successfully and productively, and also have a long shelf life;
- Late varieties – these potatoes – Krasnodar or any city in central Russia will become a hotspot for growing – are impossible to grow in open ground – they simply don't have time to ripen before frost sets in, and the plants die.

The most popular varieties
Despite the apparent limited choice (as we've already established, mid-season varieties thrive in the Central Russian region), gardeners have access to a wide variety of varieties and types of their favorite vegetables, with yields and flavors that can satisfy any desire.
By yield
The vast majority of gardeners growing potatoes in the Rostov region certainly have the well-known Adretta potato in their arsenal. Originating in Germany, thanks to its excellent agronomic characteristics and high yield, the potato has gained immense popularity, and now every Krasnodar farmer loves and appreciates it as an absolutely essential vegetable. This potato boasts high resistance to pests and diseases, and it ripens quickly – typically no more than three months from planting to technical maturity. Another undeniable advantage is its resistance to climatic fluctuations. The plant produces large, oval, perfectly shaped tubers with pleasant yellow flesh and excellent flavor.
Another popular potato variety, for which Krasnodar is well-suited as a growing location, is the Kiwi. A distinctive feature of this variety is its tuber skin – it is rough and quite dense. Plants of this variety are highly resistant to pests (such as the Colorado potato beetle and wireworms) and are also undemanding in terms of agricultural practices. These potatoes, grown, for example, in the Rostov region, will be highly productive – with this variety, you can harvest approximately 400 kg of root vegetables per hectare.
Another potato that has recently become popular in the Rostov region is the Dutch hybrid Red Scarlett. This variety boasts several advantages: high yields (up to 400 kg per hectare), resistance to infections and diseases, and excellent taste. It's easy to recognize—the tubers have bright red skin and small eyes. This variety is typically used in fast food dishes, which explains its popularity.
Dutch breeders are back on the scene, this time with the mid-early Romano variety, which produces round tubers with pale pink skin. This potato ripens quickly in the Rostov region, reaching commercial maturity in about three months.
With proper care, this variety can yield up to 1 kg of tubers per bush, and the plants are also disease-resistant.
Now let's talk about domestically bred potatoes, specifically the Zhukovsky Early. Like any potato suitable for growing in the Rostov region, it boasts high disease resistance and an astonishing yield—farmers harvest up to 1.5 kg of tubers from each plant. By choosing this variety, you can harvest within two months of planting.
To taste
When classifying potato varieties by taste, it's worth noting that all the varieties we've listed that we've classified as high-yielding also have excellent flavor (which is no surprise, as no farmer, especially one from Bryansk, would grow poor-tasting potatoes). But our gardeners especially love the well-known Bellarosa—pick up any potato, and you'll likely find this variety. These plants are characterized by their low maintenance, tolerance to drought, and high resistance to diseases and infections. Furthermore, this variety excels in productivity—up to one and a half kilograms of tubers can be harvested from a single plant.
Another undoubtedly popular and exceptionally tasty variety is Udacha. Although considered an early-ripening variety, Krasnodar is ideal for growing this potato, as it has been adapted to the climate of the central part of Russia. Udacha produces stable yields of large, starchy potatoes that make excellent dishes.
It's worth remembering that any Bryansk potato grown from premium planting material will yield a much more abundant harvest, while also boasting excellent flavor. Moreover, varieties obtained through painstaking selection have a higher resistance to potential pests and infections, meaning you'll need to spend less time and effort tending to your garden. As years of experience have shown, a normal, healthy plant can yield up to 1 kg of fruit, while a premium potato plant can yield up to 2 kg. And this is assuming no special agricultural practices were used—the plants were grown under normal conditions.
Whatever the case, the choice is yours—varietal planting material or not—the main thing to remember is that Bryansk potatoes are the tastiest, and you're sure to succeed!
