When to plant potatoes according to the lunar calendar in 2025

Focusing on climate
There may be different opinions regarding when to plant potatoes in 2025 (according to the lunar calendar or at your own discretion), but they all come down to the temperature requirements of the crop.
Please note that potatoes should be planted when the temperature on the thermometer rises above +15 °C.Typically, such days in central Russia occur in mid- to late May. In the south, spring may begin as early as mid-April, but in northern latitudes, planting will have to be delayed for a long time—until June.
In such different climates, it's important to choose not only the right day and month, but also the right variety for planting. In regions with short summers (like Western Siberia and Karelia), late varieties won't have time to ripen, while in Sochi or the Kuban region, you can harvest twice a season.
The choice of when to plant vegetables should be based on three pillars:
- The soil prepared in advance – fertilizer, watering, holes and chemical composition – should be checked and brought to an optimal condition at least 3 weeks before planting.
- A properly selected climate regime requires temperatures above 15°C for several days, with the weather forecast predicting a rise. A sudden drop in temperature or overnight frosts can destroy young seedlings. Furthermore, warm air doesn't always guarantee warm soil, so if possible, check the soil temperature—it shouldn't be below 5°C.
- Selected seedlings – these can be tubers or sprouted seeds, which are grown in advance so that they can be planted before the soil dries out due to heat.

Favorable lunar days
Once we have determined the climatic conditions necessary for the crop, we should move on to determining the best days for planting potatoes according to the lunar calendar.
As is well known, astrologers recommend planting underground plants during the waning moon. This is due to magnetic processes that change depending on the phase of our planet's moon. Thus, the waning moon encourages organic processes to move toward the Earth's core, while during the waxing moon, plants "reach" upward.
At the same time, after the full moon, groundwater rises to the surface of the earth, causing the soil to become moist and minerals to reach the upper layers, promoting better growth of tubers.
Based on the above, we can conclude that the following dates will be favorable for planting potatoes in 2025:
- May 4, 7, 9 and 31;
- June 1 and 7.
The above dates can be considered ideal for central Russia. These are the dates when the moon is in its waning phase. However, it can be difficult to meet these dates due to circumstances or unfavorable weather. Therefore, astrologers have identified other favorable dates for planting, during which the moon will be in its waxing phase:
- May 19 and 24;
- June 6, 15 and 16.
Unfavorable lunar days
In addition to favorable days, there are also unfavorable days for planting vegetables. These include unfavorable weather conditions, as well as inadequate soil and seedling preparation. However, those who prefer to check their gardening calendar against astrological forecasts also know about other dates associated with the position of the Earth's satellite.
It's well known that the worst times for a gardener to plant are the full moon and the new moon. During the full moon, all organic processes cease, and all living organisms are imbalanced. During the new moon, the Earth's satellite temporarily ceases its influence on plant life, making these days also not recommended for planting vegetables.
The full moon and new moon are ideal days for tending to garden tools, a vegetable plot, a homestead, or simply for relaxation.
According to the lunar calendar for 2025, it is not recommended to plant potatoes on the following days:
- April 16 and 30;
- May 15 and 29;
- June 13 and 28.
Whether you trust lunar calendars or not, it's recommended to heed the advice of astrologers. After all, lunar calendars have been around since ancient Egypt, when people successfully predicted the quality of the harvest based on the positions of the stars and planets.
