A review of late-ripening autumn pear varieties

Until recently, the fruit we'll be discussing wasn't as popular a crop as, for example, the apple tree. This was due to its heat-loving nature and low frost resistance. But breeding advances, and we can now talk about such a thing as "late-ripening pear varieties." Science has given residents of northern regions the opportunity to choose excellent varieties of this finicky fruit.

Features of autumn varieties

Depending on the ripening time, these fruits are divided into three types: summer, autumn and winter.

Autumn varieties ripen later than summer ones, but are stored longer.

Summer varieties ripen as early as August and are distinguished by their exceptional early maturity; autumn varieties ripen a little later but have a longer shelf life; winter varieties have the longest shelf life – up to 8 months for some varieties.

Below is a description of pear varieties that bear fruit between September and November. Fruit should be picked slightly unripe from the trees, after which it's best to store them in a cool, dark place.

Some distinctive features of such varieties:

  • the bark of the trees is dark brown;
  • trees are sensitive to frost, so choose a planting site where they will not be disturbed by winds;
  • Late-season trees love the sun – take this fact into account.

Some people think that these pears are too hard and tasteless. However, this isn't true; they simply need to be picked correctly and given time to ripen. Only then will they acquire their true flavor and provide a wealth of vitamins.
