Description of the French autumn pear variety Abbot Vettel
Content
Description of the variety
The Abbot pear variety weighs approximately 250 g. Harvesting begins in early September. Remarkably, the fruit can remain on the tree for several weeks after ripening without falling to the ground.
However, this crop is heat-loving, so freezing may occur during severe frosts. It should be noted that this pear variety pollinates itself. The fruits are suitable for both raw consumption and for making jam and compotes.
Characteristics of the tree and fruits
The Abbot pear tree is medium-sized. Its crown is pyramidal. Fruiting begins in the fourth year after planting. Peak yield is observed in the eighth year. This variety has no seasonality in fruiting, and the tree can produce delicious, large pears for decades to come.
The main characteristics of the fruit are its excellent taste and rich vitamin content. Pears are low in calories, making them a popular choice for various diets. They strengthen the body and help with vitamin deficiencies. The fruit's creamy flesh exudes a delicate aroma. Fresh pears can be stored for up to four months if stored in a cool, dark place.
Features of cultivation and care
Tree planting should be done in autumn or spring, when the plant is dormant.
Careful selection of seedlings is essential. One- or two-year-olds thrive best. Since the Abbot pear variety is medium-sized, the distance between seedlings should be 4-5 meters, and between rows, at least 6 meters. The site should be protected from drafts and well-lit. Soil is also important: it should be fertile and neutral in pH. The planting hole dimensions are as follows:
- depth – 100–120 cm;
- width – 80 cm.
Place the seedling in the center and cover the root zone with loose soil. It's also a good idea to tie the young tree to a stake.
To ensure a bountiful and stable harvest, the following care processes must be followed:
- constantly loosen the soil;
- remove weeds;
- water moderately;
- cover the tree trunk circle with mulch;
- fertilize;
- to form a crown;
- protect from frost;
- carry out disease and pest prevention.
Generally, the Abbot Vettel pear tree forms its own crown. However, once a year, the tree requires rejuvenating pruning. Frost-damaged shoots should also be removed.
The cut must be treated with garden pitch. During the flowering period, the pear tree should be protected from frost, usually by smoking and generous watering. In winter, the tree is insulated with snow.
Advantages and disadvantages
The following advantages of the variety are highlighted:
- attractive presentation;
- excellent taste;
- long shelf life;
- possibility of transportation;
- not susceptible to diseases;
- does not need pollinators.
Disadvantages include low frost resistance, but this problem can be solved by insulating the plantings before the onset of the cold season.
